Bulgaria’s Currency – the Bulgarian lev

The Bulgarian lev (which comes from the Bulgarian word for 'lion') was first introduced in 1881, and has since gone through several incarnations.

The fourth, and current, lev was first pegged to the Deutsche Mark at 1 lev = 1 Deutsche Mark.

The Bulgarian lev is now pegged to the euro at a rate of 1.95583 leva = 1 euro.

Eventually, Bulgaria will have to adopt the euro but, at present, it doesn’t have a target date to make that a reality. There’s a whole saga behind that ongoing issue.
