EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services and capital within its internal market.
Twenty-two member-countries – plus four that are not members of the EU – have abolished passport controls for movement between those countries. The area covered by these arrangements is known as the Schengen area.
Nineteen member-countries have adopted the euro as their currency.
