Countries in the EU

The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 28 member states that - as the name suggests - are located in Europe.

EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services and capital within its internal market.

Twenty-two member-countries – plus four that are not members of the EU – have abolished passport controls for movement between those countries. The area covered by these arrangements is known as the Schengen area.

Nineteen member-countries have adopted the euro as their currency.
